Area Chart

An Area chart is a line chart with the region below the line filled in. It shows trends over time like a Time Series chart. When you stack series, the filled areas show how much each series adds to the total.

Data Formats

Supported signals

  • Logs
  • Traces
  • Metrics

This panel type supports any time series data from logs, traces, or metrics. Build the query with the Query Builder, ClickHouse SQL, or PromQL.

Add an Area Chart panel

  1. Open a dashboard and click New Panel.
  2. In the New panel drawer, select Area Chart under Trends over time, then click the add button.
  3. Add a query and click Run Query. The panel draws a filled area below each series.
  4. Click Save changes.

Visualization

  • Time range: Override the global dashboard time range for this panel. Keep Global Time to follow the dashboard time picker, or choose a fixed time range.
  • Treat missing data as 0: Plot empty intervals as 0 instead of leaving a gap. Use it when no data means zero, for example with sparse counters. If a 10-minute query returns {t1: 12, t3: 21, t5: 42, t7: 29}, the toggle turns it into {t1: 12, t2: 0, t3: 21, t4: 0, t5: 42, t6: 0, t7: 29, t8: 0, t9: 0, t10: 0}. The zeros lower averages.
  • Series layout: Choose how series combine. A new panel uses Stacked.
    • Overlap: Draw each series from zero. A series can hide others where their values are close.
    • Stacked: Draw each series on top of the one below it, so the top edge shows the total.
    • 100%: Show the share of each series in the total at every point in time. See Percent stacking.

Formatting & Units

  • Unit: The unit of the y-axis, for example Milliseconds (ms), Bytes, or Percent. The default is None.
  • Decimal places: Choose how many decimals to show from tiles: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or Full (the raw value, unrounded). A Shows as preview below the tiles displays a sample value at the selected precision, for example 1,234.56 at 2. The default is 2.

Axes

  • Range: Under Y axis, set the minimum and maximum. Leave either side empty to let that bound fit the data. The axis always shows at least this range, and data outside it still stretches the axis.
  • Scale: Linear or Logarithmic.

Legend

  • Position: Below chart or Right of chart.
  • Series colors: Set the color of each series. Until you run the query, this shows "Run the query to set a color for each series".

Chart appearance

  • Line: Solid or Dashed.
  • How points connect: Straight, Smooth (a smoothed curve), Step before, or Step after.
  • Area under the line: Solid for a flat fill, or Gradient for a fill that fades out. An Area Chart is always filled, so it has no None option.
  • Opacity: The slider under Area under the line sets the transparency of the fill from 0% to 100%. The default is 44%. Lower values make overlapping series easier to read with the Overlap layout.
  • Show points: Draw a marker at each data point. Off by default.
  • When data is missing: Choose how the line handles intervals that have no data point.
    • Connect the line: Connect the line across every gap. This is the default.
    • Break long gaps: Break the line when a gap is longer than the Break when a gap is longer than value. The value cannot be shorter than the step interval of the query. It accepts durations in seconds (s), minutes (m), hours (h), days (d), and weeks (w), including compound values such as 1h30m.

Thresholds

Thresholds draw a dashed line across the chart at a value, so you can see when data crosses it. The threshold editor offers Draw a line at (a value and unit), Color, and an optional Label. Threshold edits preview live as you type, and thresholds carry over when you change the panel type. See Panel editor behavior.

Area Chart panels pre-fill the threshold value and unit when you create an alert from the panel, but not the comparison operator, because area thresholds are stored as value markers.

Actions

Select Create alert to open the alert editor in a new tab, with this panel's query pre-filled.

Add context links to open other dashboards, external URLs, or filtered views from the panel. See Interactivity for details.

Percent stacking

Set Series layout to 100% to compare the share of each series in the total over time. Each time column is rescaled so all series together add up to 100%. The y-axis shows percentage labels and stops at 100%.

The tooltip shows the raw value of each series, not its stacked or rescaled value. This applies to the Stacked and 100% layouts.

The 100% layout. The tooltip shows the raw value of each series.

Only the Area Chart panel offers the 100% layout. The Bar Chart panel offers Side by side and Stacked.

Switch panel type

The series layout carries over when you switch between Area Chart and Bar Chart:

  • Area Chart Overlap becomes Bar Chart Side by side. Stacked and 100% become Stacked.
  • Bar Chart Stacked becomes Area Chart Stacked. Side by side becomes Overlap.

Panel actions

Area Chart panels support view, edit, clone, drilldown, create alert, and download as PNG or SVG. CSV download is not available.
